Sarasotans show their love of American soil on Independence Day

Siesta Beach 7:30 a.m., the day after. Makes you proud to be an American, especially an American living in Sarasota, Florida.

  1. It was a disgrace as I was there…Sadly I see trash all the time when I go to the beach and I try and pick it up, but to get everything is imposssible. It really is disgusting and people should be heavily fined for their actions.

Ahh, the mantra of humanity, “The World is our garbage dump.”.

I picked up a lot of fireworks, cups , cans and trash on July 5 on Siesta beach. My normal 1 hour jog became substantially longer yesterday as a result of this utter disregard for the beach and waters of the gulf. I was dismayed to see my fellow Sarasotan’s walk by the trash as if it was not there problem and ,of course, someone else was going to pick it up.As I approached Crescent Beach, my hands full of trash, a passerby remarked to me how she “could not believe that the county had not come down to pick up the seaweed yet !” I remarked you have to be kidding, right ? I guess it’s a whole lot easier to complain than to get your hands a little dirty and do the right thing. I received several positive comments from folks-” your a good man” while they idly sat by and watched.

  5. Siesta Surfer — thanks for the comment. And thanks for getting your hands dirty. I’m one of those folks who didn’t.

I thought about it, but couldn’t bring myself to touch the beer bottles and vodka bottles and cups, etc., that were probably laden with the sick spittle of the kinds of people (rich or poor or in between, educated or not, they’re all of one ilk — the kind who spit on themselves, their neighbors, and their planet) who would actually leave trash on a beach. I know that sounds wussy of me, but I didn’t have gloves or any plastic bag and I just couldn’t bring myself to touch the stuff. So, I did what I could do — took photos and … idly complained.
