Sarasota, FL: Peter J. Abbott resigned from his position as Chief of Police this morning after meeting with City Manager Robert Bartolotta and Deputy City Manager regarding the future of the Sarasota Police Department. The resignation was by mutual agreement.

Effective immediately, Capt. Mikel Hollaway will assume the role of Interim Chief of Police. Chief Hollaway is a 28 year veteran of the SPD. He was raised in Sarasota and has an impeccable service record. He created the City’s first Community Oriented Police Unit, early in his career. Chief Hollaway also was the first African American SPD officer promoted to sergeant, lieutenant and captain.

A national search will begin soon for a permanent Chief of Police. It is hoped to have a permanent Chief by December 2010.
