Also, and I wish they would have kept to the original plans…but when they designed Main Street, the original Planning Commission, (of which Gill Waters attended the meetings), the original concept, was for Main Street to be pedestrian use only….can you imagine, a paver stoned street, fountains, fountains, cafes & bistros lining the walkways benches, anyway, you get the gist…a small-town “European feel”… well, that was the original plan, anyway..

(Secret) – After 6:00 p.m., just park at any of the City Hall’s 200 parking spaces…located only one block North of Main St., between Lemon & Orange… Also, park inside Whole Foods parking garage… you will never be ticketed…

Pretty funny song! I find the meters more of an irritation than an expense, but not nearly as much irritation as not finding a space. Maybe the loss of the small town feel is the worst part. In any case, a short walk does me good.

While I’m certain there are more of you who would rather have “free” parking downtown, versus to pay a dollar or two…. and who doesn’t like “everything” for free… but one must consider “where ” the money comes from, to pay for services such as park maintenance, road maintenance, tree maintenance downtown,police, firemen, etc… taxes alone, simply do not cover “all” the funds needed, to pay for these services, so, the City needs to look at other revenues.. such as paid parking. When was the last time, someone went to the beach and “paid” to park? Try doing this in Englewood, or St. Pete… where paid parking has been implemented for years..to help pay for services needed to run a city. And all the rhetoric whining by the City businesses, saying paid parking has hurt their business, and I’d say there are a lot of “liars” out there. Want to see a City business whine, ask them to stay open past 6:00 p.m. during “season” as Andrea – (previous downtown Sarasota Business Association President has tried unsuccessfuly tried to do). Andrea even provided “proof” that downtown businesses would almost double their income, if they were to stay open later during the height of the tourist season and the area businesses shot her idea down. Yet, they whine about the parking meters “hurting” their business.
